St. Augustine, Florida
|
I visited St. Augustine, Florida during an industry convention in 2013 and immediately knew I wanted to return and bring others with me. It is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement within the borders of the contiguous United States. The history and journey of the freed black people who settled in St Augustine represents a story largely unknown by Americans. We know the story of slaves running North to freedom.....but escaping South was something different altogether.
Fort Mose (pronounced Mo-zay) fortress was the northernmost garrison for St. Augustine. It is noteworthy as the first freed black settlement in colonial America and was established in 1738 as Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose. When you visit Fort Mose you will overlook the salt marsh to where the fort was located, and hear triumphant tales of these slaves flight to freedom. As you walk in the footsteps of where these soldiers and their families lived, it transports the imagination to a time long past. After East Florida was ceded to the British in the Peace of Paris of 1763, most of the free black inhabitants migrated to Cuba with the evacuating Spanish settlers. At that time, the black population at St. Augustine and Fort Mose totaled about 3,000, of whom about one-quarter were free. Our trip traces the historic route from St. Augustine to Cuba throughout our journey. And you'll learn about the significance of the Civil Rights Movement and its impact on St. Augustine throughout the 1950s and 1960s. You will also explore the rich multi-ethnic history of both St. Augustine and Cuba during this cultural journey. And we'll stop by Miami on our way to Cuba and check out N'namdi's Contemporary, one of the hottest art galleries the city has to offer. This trip is educational, inspirational and provides a wonderful opportunity for you to learn about the rich history of Cuba from the people who know it from the inside out. We'll take you on a whirlwind journey from Havana to Matanzas City, exploring the history of the Cuban people and how their resilience and creativity make them such special people of the Caribbean region. We'll tour the island with a licensed tour guide and discover the breadth and beauty of an island nation with so much to give. |
